Message from the
Chairperson
M.
Eileen Dougherty, CTFA, CFP®, AEP®, ChFC®
Semper Trust Company
King of Prussia, PA
Earlier this month we celebrated Independence Day. At this time of year we
are reminded of the sacrifices that were made by the great founders of our
country. Their vision and courage resulted in the very life, liberty and pursuit
of happiness that we are privileged to enjoy today. Our founding fathers learned
how essential it is to work as a team to attain a goal. I humbly submit that
this message has not been lost on our family of AEP® designation holders today.
As we know, the mission of NAEPC is to promote excellence, professionalism and
the team concept of estate planning among credentialed professionals. With this
spirit, I am delighted to remind you of the fantastic talk we have planned, in
Orlando, FL, during our annual conference that is reserved for AEP® designees,
only. Our presenter is the very well-respected national speaker, Albert E.
Gibbons, CLU®, ChFC®, AEP®. Al will discuss the topic of how AEP® designees can
work effectively as collaborative team members and why this is so essential for
the best outcome for our clients. While Al has spoken and written on numerous
topics over the course of his career, this is a point that he is very passionate
about, and we are delighted that he can join us this year. His presentation will
be from 5:00 to 6:00 PM on Thursday, November 8, 2012. Giving credit where
credit is due, Al's resume is far too long to summarize here, but I will note
that he is a past president of the Philadelphia Estate Planning Council and
holds the Distinguished Estate Planner Designation from that council. He has
made presentations in person, on radio and on television. His topics have ranged
from technical issues concerning life insurance and estate planning to the many
ethical issues faced by professionals today. Do yourself a favor and don't miss
this event. If you have not yet signed up for the conference, please use this
link to explore the itinerary of
wonderful speakers and topics. I hope to see you there!
We often make reference to "member benefits" when we discuss NAEPC. If you
have been too busy before to review all the great products and services that are
available to you, at a discount, don't be shy, use the following link to see
what you might be missing:

This month in "The Technical Corner," we are privileged to bring you an
article written by Jeff Scroggin, JD, LL.M., AEP®, titled "Jeff Scroggin & the
Seven Realities of Family Business Succession." This article first appeared in
the Leimberg Information Services, Inc., so we thank Steve Leimberg for
permission to reprint it in our newsletter so that we might share it with you.
In closing, this month's Spotlight is on a valued member of our AEP®
Committee, Paul Pantano, CLU®, ChFC®, AEP®, CASL, MSFS. Paul works in Pittsburg,
PA, and has a very serious commitment to maintaining the integrity of the AEP®
designation. Thanks for all you do for us, Paul!
Sincerely,
Eileen

The Technical
Corner
Jeff Scroggin & the Seven Realities of Family Business
Succession
"...but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and
taxes." Ben Franklin Jeff Scroggin believes that there are seven important
realities that need to be understood when it comes to considering the passage of
a family business. According to Jeff, clients who realize the existence of these
seven realities will reduce future heartaches and avoid the potential loss of
the family business to family conflicts and taxes.
