AEP Alert

Message from the Chairperson

M. Eileen Dougherty, CTFA, CFP®, AEP®, ChFC®
Semper Trust Company
King of Prussia, PA

September is often a time of reflection and change. As summer vacations end, our clients tend to become a bit more philosophical, and the last quarter of the year is often a busy one for estate planners. I want to remind you that the third week in October is National Estate Planning Awareness Week. It is an excellent time to engage in public service projects to educate consumers about the need to not only make an estate plan if they lack one, but also to care for their existing plan with regular reviews and updates. This is an excellent opportunity for interaction with your clients. Your proactive call or letter could make a huge impact in somebody's life and generations to come. You can use this link to the NAEPC Education Foundation's Estate Planning Answers portal, www.EstatePlanningAnswers.org, to download information to help you with this annual "do good" mission.

As we honor those who have sacrificed for our country both nationally and locally by having observed Patriot's Day on 9/11 and by observing Veteran's Day on 11/11/12 , please be sure to thank these folks and their families for the sacrifices they have made to protect and defend our great country at home and abroad. And show our country's founders that you have not forgotten them by exercising your right to vote on Election Day, 11/6/12.

This month's feature in the "Technical Corner" is "Estate Planning Issues with Intra-Family Loans and Notes" provided by Steve R. Akers, JD, AEP®… read more below.

Each newsletter we spotlight committee members in this publication. This month I invite you to learn more about Robert P. Goodman, CPA, AEP®, CFP® and Pettus C. Gibbons, MEd, CLU®, ChFC®, LUTCF®, AEP® by reading below.

I hope to see our newest AEP®s and my current fellow AEP®s in Orlando in November at the 49th Annual Conference. You will not want to miss fellow designee Al Gibbons' excellent presentation for active designees ONLY on Thursday 11/8/12 at 5:00 PM, "How AEP® Designees Can Work Effectively as Collaborative Teams and Why They Are Essential for High Net Worth Clients". To read more about the conference and Al's presentation, please visit http://www.naepc.org/convention.web.

Combining this acumen with his natural abilities to get ideas across well to groups, he worked with agents, training, consulting, and doing joint casework. Just prior to joining New York Life, Pete was working in design, development and marketing with Kettley publishing company (now Advisys).

Pete holds a BBA and Masters of Education from the University of Memphis. His professional designations include Chartered Life Underwriter®, Chartered Financial Consultant®, Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow, Accredited Estate Planner® and he has completed and taught the AMTC program sponsored by the General Agents and Managers Association. He was most recently published in the CCH Practical Estate Planner with an article on the taxation of life insurance.

A little known fact about Pete is that he started singing when he was 11 years old. In his teens through his mid twenties, Pete sang with the Memphis Symphony performing with a number of famous conductors, one of whom was Pablo Casals. As an adult, Pete sang with the Lindenwood Christian Church in Memphis, Tennessee. The director, Gary Beard, organized a professional chorale which sang in many venues and in 1987 the Gary Beard Chorale sang in Carnegie Hall in New York and in 1993 for the Spoleto Arts Festival in Charleston, South Carolina. The chorale sang under the direction of a number of greats, Jester Harriston, Sr., David Wilcox, and John Rutter and also took over the task of the Memphis Opera chorus.
