Dear Fellow AEP® Designees:

In my travels and through my role as chair of the AEP® designation committee, I am often asked what NAEPC is all about. When given a moment to explain, I state very simply that NAEPC believes in the team concept of estate planning and offers support and benefits to 250 estate planning councils around the country and you, one of the nearly 1800 active AEP® designees! I would like to draw your attention to two pieces in support of our core value: a thoughtful statement offered by Terri L. Getman, JD, CLU®, ChFC®, AEP® (Distinguished) for the "Who We Are" section of NAEPC News and a recent article in the April 2014 edition of Trusts & Estates magazine authored by John T. Midgett, JD, AEP®. Please take some time to follow the link to Terri's statement and locate your April 2014 copy of Trusts & Estates to read more. Incidentally, Trusts & Estates is a Value Partner with NAEPC. If you are not taking advantage of the $149 rate provided to NAEPC members, do so today!

Our committee works very hard to uphold both the entrance requirements for, and ongoing compliance of, each and every active designee. As a result, the yearly audit process will begin shortly; a random sampling of active designees will be selected to participate. Please don't let the word "audit" scare you! Designees are asked to submit confirmation of continuing education credit, membership in their affiliated local council, and validation that all designations and licenses are held in good standing. If you are one of the members chosen to participate, please reply promptly.

One of our yearly activities as a committee, which brings great joy, is to choose the next entrants into the Estate Planning Hall of Fame®. We have just started the process for the class of 2015 and look forward to sharing those details with you as they become available. In the interim, I invite you to join us for the 51st Annual Conference this November 5–7, 2014 in San Antonio as the class of 2014 will be inducted at a special ceremony on Friday, November 7th. While attending, you will also be able to take advantage of a special private educational session just for active designees. More information about this event will be shared very soon within this newsletter.

In closing, I would like to personally invite you to attend an upcoming program in the Robert G. Alexander Webinar Series. The next event, July 9th at 3:00 pm ET, features upcoming Estate Planning Hall of Fame inductee, Paul S. Lee, JD, LL.M., AEP® (Distinguished) Nominee, presenting "Family Investment Partnerships: Structure, Design, Issues & Problems (Beyond the Valuation Discount)."

Sincerely,

Eileen Dougherty

Next Program

3:00 pm - 4:00 pm ET

"Family Investment Partnerships: Structure, Design, Issues & Problems (Beyond the Valuation Discount)"

Expertise offered by:
Paul S. Lee, JD, LL.M., AEP® (Distinguished) Nominee

REGISTER NOW!

About the program:

FLPs holding liquid investments are used for more than the valuation discount (which may become a thing of the past). This presentation will discuss alternative ways to structure the FLP, from single class share to more exotic designs (series, "tracking," qualified & non-qualified preferreds, guaranteed payments, etc.), how different structures might be applied in different estate planning techniques, and partnership provisions to consider in order to maximize the "step-up" in basis.

About the speaker:

Paul S. Lee is a national managing director of Bernstein Global Wealth Management and is a member of the firm's wealth management group. Lee received a BA, cum laude, in English and a BA in chemistry from Cornell University; he also earned a JD, with honors, from Emory University School of Law, where he was notes and comments editor of the Emory Law Journal. He also received an LL.M. in taxation from Emory University. A frequent lecturer and panelist on investment planning and tax and estate planning, Lee has spoken at many national conferences and his articles have been published by the American College of Trust and Estate Council Law Journal; BNA Tax Management Estates, Gifts and Trusts Journal; BNA Tax Management Memorandum; The Practical Tax Lawyer; Major Tax Planning; Trusts & Estates; and the Emory Law Journal.

This is an advanced educational program.
