Esteemed Estate Planning Council Leaders, Members and Designation Holders:

On behalf of the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils (NAEPC), it is my pleasure to send to you this second edition of NAEPC News, the official Every Council Campaign newsletter. This publication was developed to better enable you to stay aware of the constantly increasing benefits and services provided to the members of NAEPC's affiliated local Estate Planning Councils and NAEPC-administered designation holders.

Every year, we hear first-time attendees to our Annual Conference express amazement at the many services and benefits with which they were not familiar. We have also had them ask about how they can become involved at the national level and how they can nominate someone to serve on the national board. When we explain that information has been sent to the local council leadership, not once but several times, they are bothered that the information was not forwarded to them by their local leaders. Maybe there are only a few of these that happen. I hope it is not wide spread. Of course, for those councils that have provided their members' email addresses to the national office, and authorized direct emails, there is no such problem.

We understand that everyone dislikes receiving "spam." We do not, however, consider email from the NAEPC to the members of its affiliated councils to fit into that category, particularly since it is sent no more than six (6) times a year. The number of councils that supply our national office with the email addresses for these members continues to rise. We offer an individual "opt-out" mechanism for councils where some members want the national email and some members don't. We simply ask you to be sure your council considers this and if your council chooses not to supply the email addresses to the national office, that you be diligent about forwarding to your members the emails the national office sends to you.

I am excited about several new member benefits that are such outstanding bargains that the vendors say we can have these deals only if the price is not on the public area of our website but is only available to our council members in a password-protected, secure, private area. We should have these ready very soon. Stay tuned to www.naepc.org!

If you are an AEP, we have some great news for you! After your 2008 dues renewal has been received and processed, a link to your personal website will be added to your contact data in the AEP directory online. Watch your e-mail for instructions on how to have this link placed online.

If you haven't marked November 12, 2008, on your calendar as the day of the NAEPC 2008 Annual Meeting and Council Leadership Day, please do so now. November 13 and 14, 2008, will be the best two days of continuing education for estate planners in all of 2008. Plan now to be in Scottsdale, Arizona, on November 12, 13, and 14, 2008! I look forward to seeing you there.

Best regards,

Upcoming Educational Program

Join us on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 for an Audio/Web conference "IRD: Dealing with Large Accumulations in IRAs and Qualified Plans" with the NAEPC's own Lawrence Wiener, CLU, ChFC, AEP. The broadcast will take place from 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm ET.

Dealing with large accumulations in IRAs and qualified plans can be a daunting task for planners. Consideration must be given to both income taxation and estate taxes. The IRS has been busy eliminating the various alternatives planners have devised to minimize such taxes. This presentation will review the alternatives still available to taxpayers.

More information, including details on how to register, can be found on the Member Benefits page of our website!

The NAEPC Foundation is hard at work in 2008!

National Estate Planning Awareness Week has been named during the third full week of October each calendar year! More information will be coming to our estate planning councils and general membership very soon. In addition, the committee is working to develop a country-wide marketing campaign to spread the good news! In conjunction with National Estate Planning Awareness Week, the NAEPC is working with The NAEPC Foundation to develop an "Estate Planning Day Toolkit" for use by all of our estate planning councils across the country. This program will contain all of the necessary items to host a public seminar locally. Information will be sent to the Executive Committee of each affiliated local council when the final kit becomes available.

Professional estate planners can now achieve an accreditation that acknowledges their experience and specialization in estate planning. The Accredited Estate Planner (AEP) designation is available to attorneys, Chartered Life Underwriters, Certified Public Accountants, Certified Trust and Financial Advisors, Chartered Financial Consultants, and Certified Financial Planners® and is awarded to professionals who meet stringent experience and education qualifications including two graduate level courses administered by The American College.

The Estate Planning Law Specialist (EPLS) designation is available to attorneys by the Estate Law Specialist Board, Inc., an attorney-run subsidiary of the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils. Attorneys who become Board-certified under this program demonstrate a high level of professionalism and commitment to the concept of specialization. We believe that as attorney specialization increases, it will benefit not only lawyers but the public. This program is currently the only program, other than certain state bar association programs which are only for residents of their particular states, accredited by the American Bar Association to Board-certify attorneys as Estate Planning Law Specialists.

See more information about both of these designations.
