Awareness Campaigns

National Financial Literacy Month (April 2012) and National Estate Planning Awareness Week (October 2012)

Please join us in promoting April as National Financial Literacy Month as you did last October for National Estate Planning Awareness Week. This significant public service initiative was announced by the Presidential Proclamation signed by President Barack Obama. A full version can be seen at www.estateplanninganswers.org/2011-presidential-proclamation-national-financial-literacy-month/.

A full version of H. Res. 1499 creating National Estate Planning Awareness Week (which takes place from October 15 – 21, 2012) can be viewed at www.estateplanninganswers.org/alert-third-week-in-october-october-18-%E2%80%93-24-2010-is-national-estate-planning-awareness-week/

In response to these declarations, the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils and The NAEPC Education Foundation have teamed up with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the American Association of Attorney-Certified Public Accountants, the American Bar Association Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law, the Society of Financial Service Professionals, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning (all members of the Synergy Summit, a unified think tank and voice of leadership for leading financial service organizations), and the Financial Planning Association®. Together these organizations represent over 800,000 professionals and the accountants, attorneys, financial planners and advisors, insurance agents and brokers, and trust officers that are members of these professional associations will mobilize the entire financial and estate planning community by providing support, tools, and education for professionals and the public they serve.

You can help promote public and professional awareness for National Financial Literacy Month by placing financial and estate planning editorial content within your website, newsletters, social media groups, local newspapers, and radio/television/web based shows. We also encourage participating groups to host community-wide public and professional programs built around financial and estate planning during the months of April and October.

Please circulate the following 2012 NFLM-NEPAW Media Kit to your members, colleagues, associates, and other appropriate parties as you see appropriate.

Thank you for all your efforts, support, and assistance to help us get this message out and for helping us recognize the lead national financial and estate planning organizations/associations as champions of improving financial awareness and literacy and uniting them with other organizations, companies, firms, members, associates and employees to actively focus using their vast community resources into a concentrated media campaign twice a year (April & October) that will:

  1. Provide the public with core fundamental principles of estate and financial planning
  2. Educate the public on how to use these principles through their personal financial challenges
  3. Assisting the public in locating appropriate professionals for their situation
  4. Motivate the public to take proper action by visiting their financial professionals to improve their and their families estate and financial planning situations
  5. Serve as a friendly bi-annual reminder and polite nudge to the public to get and keep their finances in order
  6. Benefit nonprofits through many new potential planned giving opportunities, gifts, bequests, and alternate beneficiary designations

Thank you once again for all you do and look forward to working with you again in the near future.

Microsoft Word versions of each document are available upon request.  Questions about either event can be directed to The NAEPC Education Foundation’s Executive Director, Valentino Sabuco, CFP®, AEP® at 707-322-1597 or v.sabuco@thenaepcef.org.

Public Estate Planning Day Programs, Information for Councils

Every affiliated local council is encouraged to host a publicly-based Estate Planning Day in their community during National Estate Planning Awareness Week. In an effort to assist with this process, NAEPC and The NAEPC Foundation developed materials to help you get started.

Phase 1 - The Organizational Phase
The NAEPC Foundation Committee has developed an organizational guide for hosting a public seminar. The packet of information contains the materials you'll need to get started with board approval, forming committees, creating a program and actually hosting the event. See the
complete packet of Phase 1 information.

Phase 2 - The Technical Information
The committee is working to develop a PowerPoint presentation of technical material that is appropriate for a program one - eight hours in length. Request
Phase 2 Technical Presentation Materials.

Phase 3 - The Promotional Period
NAEPC regularly launches promotional materials to publications across the country. The materials will help the media understand the importance of appropriate estate planning and alert them to estate planning day activities that may happen in their area.

We want to hear from the councils that have hosted an event! Please call the national office to offer a report of your success!

Many councils have hosted successful estate planning day events in their home communities with varying schedules.  As an added resource, several councils have submitted information about their process, format, etc.  Those reports can be found below.

Best wishes planning your program!
