Program Overview:

This program addresses the questions and analysis used to motivate the client/owner’s journey through the process of transferring their enterprise. The emphasis is on a nuts-and-bolts explanation of alternative strategies which have proven effective in transitioning ownership to employees, or family members, or third-party buyers. The presentation provides a guide for speaking with clients, their families, and key employees.

  • Which issues should be addressed in determining a successful exit from a business
  • Practical approaches for transferring the business to family and key employees
  • How to handle management transfer
  • Strategies for selling a business if the other options are not viable
  • An understanding of basic valuation approaches

James S. Aussem, JD, AEP (Distinguished) is a shareholder in the Cleveland law firm of Cavitch Familo & Durkin, Co., LPA, a former member of its board of directors and former Chair of the Business Practice Group. Jim’s practice is focused on succession planning, mergers and acquisitions, as well as estates and trusts. Jim is a frequent speaker, facilitator, and instructor for many professional organizations on topics such as business succession, buying and selling businesses, estate planning, insurance, trusts and estates. Jim is designated an Accredited Estate Planner with Distinction; AEP® Distinguished by the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils (NAEPC) which inducted him into its Hall of Fame November 17, 2022. For Our Councils

NAEPC understands that councils want and need compelling virtual programming options to supplement their regular calendar of events. To accommodate this need, NAEPC is offering affiliated councils on-demand* access to any four webinars for a reduced cost of $400. Choose the "Pro-Rated Group Gathering" option on the online registration form and we will contact you promptly for your selections and to provide the program links and accompanying materials.  

Councils that wish to offer continuing education credit must become the provider with their state and/or governing body.

*NAEPC will provide a website link and password to the recorded version of each webinar you choose, which can be used to show the program to council members and guests who have gathered together in person or on a virtual meeting. Please allow up to three business days after the live webinar to receive the link to the recorded program. 


Continuing Education Credit

Continuing education credit is available at most webinars for Accredited Estate Planner® designees.  In addition, a general certificate of completion will be available for those who feel the program satisfies their continuing education requirements and are able to self-file.  It is the responsibility of the attendee to determine whether their state, discipline, or designation will allow one to self-file for a distance-learning program.  Please contact webinars@naepc.org prior to attending your first program if you have any questions with regard to the availability of credit.
